description Rapid Prototyping technologies, besides producing pieces with complex geometries and with high dimensional accuracy, can optimize the development process of a product by providing tests and improving communication among the people involved in the project. This article presents and discusses two Rapid Prototyping technologies, one additive and another subtractive (CNC milling), used in the production of two pieces from the same digital file. These pieces were compared, considering parameters such as: production time, cost, material and fidelity regarding the original file. The results show that additive technology is recommended for models with complex geometries or that require internal details, whereas the subtractive technology is characterized by lower production cost, better surface finish and diversity of material use, making the choice of one or another technology for a specific project depend on the objectives for which the prototype is being produced.

Las tecnologías de Prototipado Rápido, además de producir piezas con geometrías complejas y con alta precisión dimensional, pueden optimizar el proceso de desarrollo de un producto por proporcionar pruebas y mejorar la comunicación entre los involucrados en el proyecto. El presente artículo presenta y discute dos tecnologías de Prototipado Rápido, una aditiva y otra sustractiva (fresado CNC), utilizadas para producir dos piezas a partir de un mismo archivo digital. Estas piezas fueron comparadas, considerando parámetros como: tiempo de producción, costo, material y fidelidad al archivo original. Los resultados muestran que la tecnología aditiva es recomendada para modelos con geometrías complejas o que necesiten de detalles internos, y que la tecnología sustractiva se caracteriza por un menor costo de producción, mejor acabado superficial y diversidad de uso de materiales, haciendo que la elección de una u otra tecnología para un determinado proyecto dependa de los objetivos para que se está produciendo el prototipo. As tecnologias de Prototipagem Rápida, além de produzirem peças com geometrias complexas e com alta precisão dimensional, podem otimizar o processo de desenvolvimento de um produto por proporcionarem testes e melhorarem a comunicação entre os envolvidos no projeto. O presente artigo apresenta e discute duas tecnologiasde Prototipagem Rápida, uma aditiva e outra subtrativa (usinagem CNC), utilizadas na produção de duas peças a partir do mesmo arquivo digital. Essas peças foram comparadas, considerando-se parâmetros como: tempo de produção, custo, material e fidelidade ao arquivo original.
