description South American Cordia trichotoma wood was studied as a possible raw material for papermaking. The objective of this work was to evaluate if C. trichotoma thinings could be used as papermaking raw material, supposing its industrial culture is possible. The morphology of wood elements and their variation with the age of trees were evaluated. Fiber dimensions (Length 1491 microns, fiber diameter 15.7 microns, cell wall thick 5.11 microns) indicate that they are longer, narrower and ticker than fibers of regional Eucalyptus species. Growths rings study shows that fiber lengths increase uniformly and that there was a diminution of fiber width between the ninth and the twenty-first ring. Fiber wall thickness and fibril angle presented a constant value. These fiber characteristics confirm that only young trees could be used as papermaking resources.
