Description
Summary:Santa Gertrudis cattle has been introduced to Brazil in the decade of the ‘50s. It has won a prominent position in the Brazilian livestock scenario. However there are scarcely any studies developed for the estimation of variance components, heritability, genetic correlations, etc. The aim of the present study was to estimate genetic parameters for growth traits in Santa Gertrudis cattle, for a roundup in São Paulo state. The traits analyzed were the weights observed (RW) at birth (BW) (n=1061), 120 (RW120) (n=428), 205 (RW205) (n=934), 365 (RW365) (n=695) and at 550 days of age (RW550) (n=549), as well as pedigree data of 3852 animals. The single-trait Animal Model using the software MTDFREML included as fixed effects sex, year, month, handling and dam age class, and as aleatory the direct, maternal genetic effects and of permanent environmental effect of dams.
