Description
Summary:Phytophthora genus has been a group whose isolation and conservation is laborious. For this reason, several culture medium have been developed for their study. This paper proposes the tobacco-agar medium as alternative for the growth and development of P. nicotianae. In this work the strains Pp1 and Pp 6 isolated of tobacco and pineapple respectively, were used. The isolates were placed individually in Petri dishes with tobacco-agar medium, tomatoagar flour medium and cornmeal-agar medium. The cultural and morphological characteristics were described and the lineal growth of the fungus was measured and graphed. Pp1 grew rapidly in tobacco-agar medium, showing significant differences with the rest of the media tried. Pp6 showed a significantly minor growth in tobacco-agar medium. Both strains showed a weak, fluffy micelia with irregular borders; they formed reproductive structures as chlamydospore and sporangia. The tobacco-agar medium was considered effective for growth of P. nicotianae isolated from different hosts.
