The criteria and standards were derived from the literature. A review of the clinical histories of 55 patients treated with paclitaxel between 2000 and 2004 was carried out. The results show a clear trend toward considering including the results of clinical trials in daily practice, which explains deviations in the use of paclitaxel for this prescription (patients had ovarian, breast or lung cancers) and in dosage (only 40% received the current dosages). Paclitaxel was shown to be an effective medication, with a response rate of 48% and moderate toxicity. |

Al ser un medicamento con una indicación específica, elevado costo y efectos adversos potencialmente graves. Se revisaron las historias clínicas de 54 pacientes que recibieron paclitaxel entre el año 2000 y 2004. Los resultados del estudio destacan que existe una clara tendencia a incorporar a la práctica diaria los resultados de los ensayos clínicos, lo que explica las desviaciones del índice encontradas para la indicación (los enfermos tenían cáncer de ovario, de mama y de pulmón). El paclitaxel se demuestra como un fármaco eficaz con una tasa de respuestas del 48 por 100 y toxicidad moderada. No obstante, sería deseable la realización de estudios de relación costo/beneficio, puesto que el alto precio de este medicamento puede disparar el costo de tratamiento del cáncer de mama si se utiliza sin criterios de selección de pacientes.
