Summary: | In the province of Misiones, cardiovascular diseases (CVD) are the first cause of mortality. We aimed to establish the frequency of major Risk Factors (RF) for CVD in isolated and combined ways, and those related to ther life style and to identify the RF related for Metabolic Syndrome (MS) in a group of entering students. We worked with a population of 130 university entering students. We prepared a file with personal data, family and personal records, of CVD, high blood pressure (HBP), smoking and physical activity. Anthropometric parameters were assessed and blood pressure. 12 hour fasting blood samples were collected. A 39% showed CVD family antecedents, 31% were smokers, 6% had high blood pressure, 12.7% increased cholesterol, 33.2% decreased HDL–cholesterol, 6.1% were overweight and/or obese, 5.8% showed abdominal obesity and 64% had sedentary habits.
