Wood fiber morphology of Eucalyptus grandis from the argentine mesopotamia. 3. Proportion of fiber type populations in the trunk

description The Argentine Mesopotamia has about 133,000 ha with Eucalyptus grandis. The aim of the first work to this series was to study the biometric parameters of the fiber of 10 individuals of this species. The aim of the second work was to define the different fiber populations: population "A" with long and thin fibers, population "B" with medium fibers with a density of up to 80 pit/mm, and population C with vasicentric tracheids. Finally, the aim of the thrid work was to use this new methodology to determine the proportions of these fiber types in two infividuals of Eucalyptus grandis. We found that the longitudinal variations did not present a defined pattern, whereas in the radial sense, the proportion of population "A" increased from the pith up to the cambium and that of population C decreased rapidly; the proportion of population B also decreased, although less markedly. This seems to indicate that the bole prossesses a central part of tissue for support and conduction, which serves for support only in the periphery.
