La globalización ha sido el punto de partida frente a la creciente competencia que se ha evidenciado en los últimos años entre los territorios (regiones, ciudades y países). Especialmente los países han adoptado e implementado estrategias de diferenciación para estimular el turismo y la inversión económica. El turismo se ha consolidado como una de las principales fuentes de divisas para los países latinoamericanos.
