Summary: | The aim of this study was to determine the value of the longitudinal dispersion coefficient (DL) in the Chicamtoltina stream (Alta Gracia) by means of two different techniques, in order to compare possible differences between both values. The first technique consisted in applying a comprehensive formula that take into account a detailed description of hydrodynamic parameters obtained by river flow measurements with a hydroacoustic instrument, while the other one consisted in injecting a conservative tracer, using the same approach as the non-ideal reactor theory of flow with dispersion. This work was done under low flow conditions (dry period) and high flow conditions (wet period). It was obtained that, regardless of river flow, the values of DL obtained by both techniques have good concordance, adjusting more in the dry period than in the wet period. Due to the fact that frequent flow measurement are carried out in this stream, it is concluded that, given similar characteristics of flow and morphology of the section, the hydrodynamic data can be used to determine DL, in order to incorporate accurate data that are applied to contaminant transport models.
